Salmon Lures
The best salmon lures are worthy of this remarkable fish. Salmon are found in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans as well as in the Great Lakes. Born in fresh water they migrate to the open ocean to mature for several years then return to their natal stream to spawn after traveling hundreds of miles upstream. Each year salmon have a period of tremendous growth and some can reach up to 150 pounds, although 50 pounds is average.
All salmon lures are most effective when they entice the fish’s sense of smell, sound and sight, whether you are deep-sea fishing or fly fishing in a large stream. Other things to consider when choosing salmon lures are the body of water you will be fishing in, the season, and the feeding habits of salmon for the time of year.
When salmon fishing in a lake the best lure is a colorful, rattling fishing plug made irresistible to the fish by adding odorous bait to one of its many hooks. In the Pacific Northwest the best salmon lures are spinners of a size appropriate to the kind of salmon found there. Make sure the lures are bright and colorful, and add anchovies or Smelly Jelly for attractive odor.
Spoon lures are the best salmon lures for ocean fishing because they move like the bait fish salmon love. Choose spoons that are colored green blue or black or glow in the dark since these colors show up the most in deep water. Another option is an ultraviolet lure as salmon can see UV exceptionally well; UV colored salmon lures will also work well in shallows and lakes. If you are fishing for salmon less that 50 feet below the surface just be sure to use a colorful lure to appeal to the fish visually.
