Muskie Lures
Interested in the best muskie lures to increase the odds of catching this ‘fish of ten thousand casts’? Muskellunge, or muskies, are the largest of the pike family and are found in North American lakes and rivers. They grow up to 4 ½ feet long, can weigh more that 60 pounds and eat anything they can get into their mouths. Though rare, muskies are a popular sport and trophy fish. Quite adept at escaping once hooked they are fast, strong, shake their heads violently and spring out of the water to perform spectacular flips when snagged on a lure. Once caught in a net they often free themselves using their acrobatic abilities. Muskellunge are vulnerable to over-fishing, so best to practice catch-and-release when angling for this admirable aquatic denizen.
When selecting muskie lures and fishing tactics, consider the time of year, clarity of water, time of day and lure presentation for the best results. Muskies see, hear and smell well enough for anglers to benefit from reducing line visibility, covering their scent and casting far away from the boat to prevent the sounds from scaring away the fish.
A moderate approach is using a medium-sized rod with medium-sized, jointed muskie lures colored orange or red on a thin, dark green line. Cover ones hands with sugar and add fish scent and salt to all muskie lures to avoid repelling them. In the early spring the muskies’ metabolisms are slower so using small crank bait muskie lures in the shallow waters where they feed on schools of fish will work best. In the late fall, when muskies’ metabolisms are higher, one can get away with using larger muskie lures on a heavy line while trolling quickly through a lake but only if the speed of the boat is not too great.
