Ice Fishing Lures
There are many kinds of ice fishing lures to choose from today, though this was not always the case. Ancient hunters would risk their lives to obtain food by walking onto frozen lakes, boring holes in the ice, lowering decoys into the water to attract the fish then spearing them once they were close enough. Currently ice fishing is a popular sport throughout Northern Europe, North America, Japan and South Korea and a myriad of different gear is available; from underwater cameras used to locate the fish, to ice fishing lures designed to entice specific species.
Ice fishing lures generally come in either a vertical or horizontal orientation. Most commonly used are weighted jigs, spoon lures and swimming lures. Each type has an individual presentation underwater, and attracts fish in a different way.
Ice jigs are weighted ice fishing lures and are normally vertical. They work best for fish near the bottom and can be used with or without live bait, as they move similarly to the minnow crappie and perch feed on in the winter. Some ice jigs are horizontal, making them easily inhaled by fish and automatically placed to hook into the gills. All ice fishing jigs are versatile; they attract many kinds of fish and can be used in both fresh and saltwater.
Spoons are ice fishing lures usually in a vertical presentation that come in a wide range of sizes and motions. Some spoons quiver like a small fish swimming, others are heavy and sink down like a rock, raising a cloud of debris, which is attractive to many fish. Finally, the ice fishing lures most likely to trigger a fish into striking are swimming lures. These lures spiral and twirl as they move down the water column, making them irresistible to bluegill, crappie and perch.
