Fishing Spoons
Ovoid, concave fishing spoons are a necessity in any tackle box. Their random movements in combination with a light-reflecting capacity deceives complacent fish into believing what they see before them is an easy meal of an injured shad. They bite and discover that they have become the very meal they hoped to catch. Invented in 1848 by angler Julio T. Buel the fishing spoon has evolved and can be used accurately in water of any depth, to catch any kind of fish that feeds on minnows.
Made from brass, lead plastic or steel in a variety of colors and smooth or textured surfaces fishing spoons frequently are the most effective lures in many different angling scenarios. There are casting, trolling, top-water and jigging spoons, each of which have the basic characteristics of a fishing spoons; hook, eye and concave body, with additional attributes tailored for their use.
Jigging fishing spoons are heavy, flat and thick and often come with a treble hook hanging from their tail. Used to catch deep-water, bottom dwelling fish, they can be presented in variety of ways but get the most hits on their free fall down toward the lake, river or sea bed. Top water fishing spoons have a solitary hook welded to their body to prevent snagging and a skirt to entice fish. Mostly used for casting and retrieval in water with dense vegetation, they skitter on the surface without catching on the plants. Trolling fishing spoons are thin, light, flutter easily and are commonly used in combination with some sort of depth control system. They work best when trolling for open water fish like salmon. Casting spoons are the most general category of fishing spoon and come in a variety of sizes. They have excellent flash, making them ideal for clear water fishing.
