Fishing Plugs
Fishing plugs are hard bodied fishing lures made from plastic or wood. Designed to imitate the shape and movement of deep-bodied small fish, frogs, lizards and other prey, they entice larger fish and encourage them to strike through movement. Some fishing plugs are made of two pieces hinged together to mimic the action of a fishtail moving underwater.
Some fishing plugs are engineered to bob near the top of the water while others sink to a specific depth beneath the surface. Called Crank Baits due to the crank action of the bait casting reels they are commonly used with, fishing plugs that descend are made with a special metal or plastic lip to control the depth to which they sink. Buoyant plugs that stay near the surface are called Top Water plugs or Floating plugs
When fishing in fresh water or out at sea fishing plugs are excellent for meeting the specific fish at the depth it swims. Most fish are territorial and will attack any small object that comes too close, as well as strike at what looks like easy prey. Plugs are made to look like the fish they are imitating along with holographic eyes and are easy to control. Once the lure is close by the multiple hooks easily ensnare the fish, whether bass, salmon or trout.
Fishing plugs are great for novices as they have movement and action built in. For more effectiveness when using plugs one can vary the retrieval speed, jerk the line or stop it all together to make it irresistible to the fish.
Available in a range of sizes, smaller plugs usually work best on smaller fish while larger plugs are suitable for bigger fish but this is not always the case. Large fish can be caught with very tiny fishing plugs.
