Fishing Rod Blanks
All true fishing enthusiasts consider making their own custom fishing rods at some point and the fishing rod blanks chosen for the job determine their success or failure. Fishing rod blanks decide the final fishing rod’s length, action, weight, reel and number of sections and are the starting point for any custom rod.
Fishing rod blanks are the core of the rod and are generally made of a graphite and fiberglass composite, although a new series of blanks and rods made from carrot fibers called Curran are now available. Pre-rolled graphite blanks often have a graphite or fiberglass ‘scrim’ or mesh, adhered around the carbon core with resin. This increases ‘hoop strength’ or the ability to resist snapping under pressure. One can also purchase sheets of graphite to custom roll into blanks.
Graphite blanks perform the best for fast or extra fast action while fiberglass is best for slow taper. Casting, spinning, fly, bait and saltwater fishing rod blanks come in different lengths and tapers and choosing these specific attributes depends primarily on the anglers preference and the rod’s purpose. One must decide where they will fish, for what kind of fish and with which kind of reel to choose the best blank.
Generally, fly-fishing rod blanks are ideally lightweight, have a slow taper to cast well and are long and sturdy enough to accommodate the fish they catch. When a longer cast is needed a faster taper is preferable. Both trolling and bottom fishing rods need a fast taper and function optimally made with fishing rod blanks of short to medium lengths. Off shore fly-fishing and surf rods are best made with heavy weight extra long blanks for distance casting, a fast taper and to withstand the resistance of strong ocean fish, crashing waves, and heavy lines and lures.
