Zebco Reels
Those interested in learning more about Zebco reels might be surprised to know that their original business was petroleum extraction. Called the Zero Hour Bomb Company, Zebco manufactured electric time bombs in their Tulsa, Oklahoma factory during the 1930’s. These bombs were used to fracture the walls of oil wells, produce a highly permeable layer of sand and allow for the easy release of liquid hydrocarbon fuel.
The demand for petroleum extracting electric time bombs decreased in the 1940’s and their business began to falter. During this slowdown Zebco was approached by a watchmaker-turned-inventor named R.D. Hull, who was seeking investors for his newly designed fishing reel. A common complaint about fishing reels at the time was the frustrating backlash when casting and Hull’s reel would not backlash. The partnership was formed, Zebco introduced the first spin cast reel to the public in 1949, called The Standard, and it proved so popular that the Zero Hour Bomb Company abandoned its original product to focus exclusively on Zebco reels.
Zebco reels are arguably the most versatile reels currently available, as they are all capable of right and left handed approaches. Featuring the easy-cast, no backlash design of the original Standard, their spin cast reels have the same push button casting R.D. Hull invented, making them simple to use for all levels of experience. Zebco reels range in cost from $20 to $350, and spinning and bait cast reels suitable for fresh or saltwater fishing are also available. Currently owned by the parent company, W.C. Bradley Co., Zebco reels today come in a wide range of prices and styles. All Zebco reels come with a one-year warranty, and although they do not sell replacement parts, there is a Rod Exchange program for those few anglers who experience problems with a Zebco product.
